This glossary shows words related to the integrating project.

Adobe Bricks
Noun
Bricks formed out of mud or clay, and baked in a kiln or under the sun. Adobe bricks are often bonded together with mud- or lime-mortar joints, and coats of lime-and-sand stucco often cover adobe walls to prevent them from eroding in the rain.
Example: The use of ADOBE BRICKS dates back to prehistoric times, and continues today.

Balcony
Noun
A platform that projects from the wall of a building, and which is enclosed on its outer three sides by a balustrade, railing, or parapet.
Example: I can see the whole city in the BALCONY.

Beams
Noun
Long, sturdy piece of squared timber or metal spanning an opening or part of a building, usually to support the roof or floor above.
Example: The roof will be supported by a BEAM.

Noun
A structure with a roof and walls, such as a house, school, store, or factory.
Example: I like that BUILDING.

Ceilings
Noun
The upper interior surfaces of a room or other similar compartment.
Example: The walls and CEILING glittered with gold and precious gems.

Coatings
Noun
A thin layer or covering of some material.
Example: It looks as if the surface COATING is peeling away in places.

Column
Noun
An upright pillar, typically cylindrical and made of stone or concrete, supporting an entablature, arch, or other structure or standing alone as a monument.
Example: The roof is supported by the COLUMN.

Construction
Noun
Construction is the activity of putting together different elements, using a detailed design and plan, to create a structure for a certain location.
Example: Without an understanding of CONSTRUCTION, architects cannot understand the building's limitations.

Courtyard
Noun
An unroofed area that is completely or mostly enclosed by the walls of a large building.
Example: The flowers in the COURTYARD are blooming.

Cupola
Noun
A small dome, or hexagonal or octagonal tower, located at the top of a building. A cupola is sometimes topped with a lantern. A belvedere is a square-shaped cupola.
Example: A lot of churches have, CUPOLAS.

Curtain wall
Noun
A wall without a structural function.
Example: Architects must know the difference between a load-bearing wall and CURTAIN WALLS, also known as non-load bearing walls.

Facade
Noun
An exterior wall, or face, of a building. The front facade of a building contains the building’s main entrance, the rear facade is the building’s rear exterior wall, and the side facades are a building’s side exterior walls.
Example: I like the house FACADE.

Foundation
Noun
The lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.
Example: In many cases the strength of soil, which determines the FOUNDATION size and type are unknown until the construction starts on site. The soil excavation can create serious problems as the trial pits may not always determine all the issues related to FOUNDATION design.

Noun
Building process in which a skeleton-like structure support weight.
Example: The construction process will be a FRAMEWORK STRUCTURE.

Noun
Long and narrow space of a building or a house that communicates some rooms with others.
Example: The bathroom is connected by the HALL.

Load-bearing wall
Noun
Wall that is an active structural element of a building, which holds the weight.
Example: Architects must know the difference between a LOAD-BEARING WALL and curtain walls, also known as non-load bearing walls.

Masonry foundation
Noun
Structural foundation made from masonry.
Example: The foundations will be based on MASONRY FOUNDATION.

Openings
Noun
Are voids in a wall such as windows, doors, or even niches. The following guidelines apply to such openings.
Example: The architect leaves an OPENING in the wall.

Pile-driven foundations
Noun
Commonly-used form of building foundation that provide support for structures, transferring their load to layer of soil or rock that have sufficient bearing capacity and suitable settlement characteristics.
Example: The foundations will be based on PILE-DRIVEN FUOUNDATIONS.

Roof
Noun
The external protective structure on top of a building.
Example: The only way of connecting cladding boards to the ROOF structure was by using timber battens, yet the batten fixings would penetrate the rubber membrane.

Noun
A window installed in a roof or ceiling.
Example: I like to see the sky through my SKYLIGHT.

Slab-on-grade
Noun
Structural engineering practice in which the concrete slab that will serve as the foundation for a building or other structure is formed from a mold that is set into the ground.
Example: The foundations will be based on SLAB-ON-GRADE foundation.

Noun
A construction process, in which the walls bear weight.
Example: The construction system will be a SOLID CONSTRUCTION.
